Cognitive Radio:An intelligence embedded mobile communication
Abstract:
Recent advances have enabled wireless handsets with data download capability of 1-10Mbps. In the next few years, this will be extended to roughly 100Mbps and then on to over 1Gbps in the next decade. This ability to handle data at very high speed will enable consumers to easily handle high quality audio, video, and high resolution images. However, it is often overlooked that as high performance wireless data services are widely deployed, lack of additional spectrum will become a serious limitation.
Cognitive Radio (CR) systems have been proposed as a possible solution to the spectrum scarcity. Cognitive Radio is a system that senses its operational electromagnetic environment and can dynamically and autonomously adjust its radio operating parameters to modify system operation, such as maximize throughput, mitigate interference, facilitate interoperability.
The cognitive radio, built on a software-defined radio, is defined as an intelligent wireless communication system that is aware of its environment and uses the methodology of understanding- by-building to learn from the environment and adapt to statistical variations in the input stimuli, with two primary objectives in mind. Firstly, highly reliable communication whenever and wherever needed. Secondly, efficient utilization of the radio spectrum.
